Progress Update and A Quick Workout

Hey guys!  There's been a lot of personal shit happening in my life, so I took a mini-hiatus from the blog.  BUTTTTT I'm back :)

I wanted to share my 2 week update of how my Shakeology/FocusT25 Challenge is going:

I'm very happy with my 2 week progress!!  I have been at a weight loss plateau for the past 1.5-2 years- I can go above, but not below my magic number.  Talk about frustrating.  But after only 2 weeks of being on shakeology, hardcore clean eating, and focus T25, and I busted past my weightloss plateau by 4 pounds!!!  That second picture was also taken post-dinner as well.  Say whaaaaaaaaaaaat?  If you are stuck, I would highly recommend shakeology and a challenge pack from beachbody.  I can give you more information if ya email me :)

But for those of you who aren't sure if you want to spend money on shakeology and other workout videos, here is a quick ab and leg workout I whipped up just cause and did on my off day from T25 for my bootycall workout for Tone It Up.- super quick, wham, bam, thank you ma'am I just burned some cals.  I believe in being active every day.  It really helps.  The focus of my workout?

ABS AND LEGS

Somehow, these are my favorite workouts.  I love abs and legs.  Like unhealthy obsession love.  I would do them everyday if I didn't run the risk of being seriously unbalanced on the top half lol.  But here is my Ab and Leg workout of the day.

Warmup

Walking Lunges- 30 seconds
15 burpees
Jumping Jacks- 30 seconds
High Knees- 30 seconds
Butt Kickers- 30 seconds

Abs

50 regular crunches
50 crunches- feet up
50 side crunches (left side)
50 side crunches (right side)
50 Russian twists (with or without weights- I did mine without)

Legs

10 squat jumps
20 sumo squats+ 15 pulses on last squat
20 glute bridge pulses
10 single leg glute bridges (each leg)
20 regular squats+15 pulses on last squat
15 side lunges (each side)

Cooldown

Hamstring stretch
Pigeon
Side bends

Easy peasy yall.  I would have made this workout super cute and pretty for a print out, but honestly, ain't nobody got time fo dat.  I gotta run y'all.  If you like my workout, next time I'll make it super cute I promise.

Mimosa Moments: Kentucky Sidecar

Heyyyy all.  Hope your weeks went well.  I had a pretty good week- good workouts, good work, good food, etc.  But seriously...TGIF.

I'm sharing a recipe for a cocktail that I absolutely adore (no champagne this week.  *gasp*).  The Kentucky Sidecar is the name of the game this week and it is ah-mayz-ing.  Here's a pic of one I got at this awesome speakeasy themed restaurant, Still, a couple weeks ago:

Pure deliciousness

A regular Sidecar cocktail consists of brandy, triple sec/orange liqueur, and fresh lemon juice.  A Kentucky Sidecar is the same thing, but instead of brandy, it's bourbon.  Talk about a dangerous game! However, they are one of my favorite cocktails and I highly suggest you try one like right now.

Don't be discouraged if yours comes out a little sour though- this cocktail is a finely balanced drink of sweet and sour (rim the glass with sugar, like above, to make it even better).

Here's the recipe:

2oz bourbon
1oz triple sec
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
cherries
sugar

1) Rim your cocktail glass (preferably a martini glass) with the sugar.

2) Mix the liquor, lemon juice, and cherry in a shaker full of ice.

3) Strain into the cocktail glass.  Optional:  Reach into the shaker, pull out the cherry, and plop it in your drink as classily as possilbe (highly recommended).

And there you have it.  Easy peasy, simple dimples.  Be warned that this drink does sneak up on you, so don't have too many even though they taste absolutely awesome.  I will be headed to Still tonight for some good eats and a sidecar or two.  Remember...everything in moderation....including moderation ;)

Sorry for the wicked short post today guys but I'm on the run!  Have a good Friday and be safe!

Motivation Nation: How to Stay Motivated When You're Busy

Hey all!  I decided this Wednesday to do a post on how to stay motivated when you're super busy.  It's a struggle for me, honestly.  I have a lot of shit going on.  I have a full-time job, I go to school, I have a house to run, boyfriend to babysit, cat to feed, groceries to buy, etc.  Sometimes the days just get away from me!  It's been a struggle for me to stay motivated, especially when I skip one day.  It snowballs away from there.  I know y'all know what I mean.

So here are some of my tips for how I stay motivated.  Following these tips, I've finally gotten my shit together and actually stayed on schedule with my workouts.  It's a long post today guys, but I think totally worth the read :)

1.  Have a Paradigm Shift

Ironically this is in one of my older posts

First things first.  You HAVE to have the moment of clarity where you decide yes.  I'm gonna do this.  If you are like eh, fitness, whatever, it's kinda cool, you are destined to fail.  You are going to be like heyyyy....I had a late day at work, no need to go to the gym.  Man, I'm tired...guess I won't be going to the gym.

You need to commit.  Like write it down.  Say it in the mirror.  Something.  But you need to have the moment that yes, you are going to do this.  It may suck ass sometimes, but you are worth it and you are strong enough to get it done.

2.  Define Your Goals

Alright so congrats.  You've had your paradigm shift and fitness is the lifestyle for you.  Next thing is define your goals.  Make a vision board, write them down, whatever.  Just physically put your goals in a place to be seen.  Do you wanna lose weight, tone up, gain crazy muscle, complete your first 5K, get your splits?  Write it down and give yourself a timeline to meet your goal.  Not a I wanna lose 50 pounds in 2 weeks timeline.  No.  A healthy, reasonable timeline.  A la What About Bob? you need to take baby steps y'all.  Small consistent changes on a daily basis add up over time.

3.  Talk it Out and Find Others Like You

Seriously.  TELL people about your workouts and awesome nutritional habits.  Make an Instagram for the sole purpose of sharing your successes, failures, everything.  The fitness community on IG is absolutely incredible.  They are very supportive.  Everyone's been there- good days, bad days, and if they're like you, they will understand, offer words of encouragement, and support you.  It's ok to talk about your new lifestyle!  When I was just casually dating my man Gym, I would never talk about him to anyone.  Ever.  And ya know what?  I didn't care that I'd skip out on him or not see him for a couple weeks at a time.  Now look at me.  Because we became very serious, I changed my blog to be all about our awesome relationship.  I started daily check-ins on instagram.  You should do the same.  The support you get will help you stay motivated!  And ya know, sometimes your friends will not necessarily support your new decision if they aren't healthy themselves.  That's ok.  If they're your real friends they will respect your decision, and you can gain support from other avenues.

4.  Schedule Your Workouts

If you don't have one, buy a planner.  And physically block out time for workouts.  Find something that works for you.  Before work, after work, during work...whatever.  But block out a time (at least 30 min a day) and actually record it in your planner.  Consider it an unbreakable meeting.  You HAVE to go.  Make it a priority and it will become a habit to go.  But when you start, schedule it out.

5.  Plan Plan Plan!

Seriously.  Take some time on Sunday.  Plan your workouts.  Plan your menu for the week.  Grocery shop.  Meal prep at least until Wednesday.  Get healthy snacks.  Pack your breakfast and lunch.  Planning is your number one friend when it comes to staying on track and being motivated.  If you don't have your meals and snacks and water in an easy to grab place before you go to work, you're more likely to grab that Snickers.  If you don't have your gym bag packed, you aren't gonna go to the gym after work, and let's face it, when you get home, your ass is most likely gonna be parked on the couch, watching your DVR'd Dance Moms last night.  5 min of planning at the end of every day can make boukoos of difference.

6.  Find a Buddy

This buddy doesn't even have to be physically with you, although it's always hard to break a gym date when you know someone is waiting for you.  Join an online community where everyone is posting post workout photos, motivational quotes, recipes, everything.  Knowing people are counting on you and supporting you will make you less likely to skip.

7.  It's Ok to be a Beginner

It's ok to be a beginner.  Everyone famous in history was a beginner.  Too often we get discouraged because we see that super fit girl rockin at the gym or the massively buff dude lifting like 1000000000 pounds.  And you think I'm not that good, why bother?  Guess what?  They were just like you once!!  Have inspirations and idols, but never let the middle of their journey affect you and your decision to change your life.  One day the tables will be turned and you will be that person and someone will be looking at you for inspiration!

8.  Get In Touch with Your Inner Musical

a la Julie Andrews

Music motivates you.  It's like, a scientifically proven fact.  Make sure that you have a bad ass workout playlist that motivates you.  My current list is a mix of rap, electronic dance music, and 80s classics.  Don't ask.  But when I hear We Built This City followed by We Own This (From FF6) and/or Colt 45 by Afroman, and THEN followed by some Basshunter, I am so beyond pumped.  And I will run some crazy ass intervals.  And pump some freal iron.  And basically just be super awesome at the gym.  Find what pumps you up, get an itunes card/create a pandora station, and go.

9.  Try Something New

There are always new fitness fads happening.  Try something that interests you (preferably not prancercise, unless you want me to judge you).  ALWAYS only do workouts you want to do.  If you hate running, don't run.  But if you've never tried aerial yoga or crossfit, don't knock it till ya try it.  Most gyms and studios have free passes to check out a class or two or run specials before you commit to a full on membership.  And keep your eye out for Groupons. Keeping you fitness routine fresh is a great way to keep from getting bored.

10.  Sleep in Your Workout Clothes

I'm totally serious.  If I do an early morning workout, I sleep in my sports bra, shirt and shorts.  Literally all I have to do is roll out of bed when the alarm goes off, put on my shoes, and go.  No thinking.  If I have my PJs on tho...forget that mess.  I will stay in bed for like 22 snooze rounds.  Being in your workout clothes when you go to bed gets you in the mindset of doing fitness in the morning.  Don't put your phone across the room (if I did that I would just never wake up- I'm a heavy sleeper).  But do sleep in your workout clothes.  It simplifies everything.

11.  Be Ok with Your Body Right Now

Yes.  You have made a commitment to change your body.  Everyone has areas they hate and are insecure about.  But hating your body will not help you reach your goals.  When you first start working out and aren't seeing results, or hit a plateau, this negativity will seriously discourage you.  Make the conscious effort to remember that a) Rome wasn't built in a day and b) even though you want to be better, it's ok to be happy with your body as is.  Striking that balance between wanting to change but realizing a stick skinny perfectly toned body isn't everything is very important.  Live life.  Don't deny yourself your favorite things because you're trying to get fit.  Love yourself and love your decision to make yourself better.

12.  Live Life and Celebrate

Celebrate the new healthy you.  Pamper yourself a lil bit.  I personally always give myself a little "hellz yes you are a beast!!" nod in the mirror after every workout.  I also have little prizes for myself and big prizes for myself.  I am a firm believer in rewarding yourself for your awesomeness.

Little prizes obviously happen more often than the bigger ones.  For example, I loveeee massages.  I get my massages at a massage therapy school, so they're pretty affordable (suriously look into it.  I can get an hr long massage for like 40 bucks at a school as opposed to like $65 for 30 min.  WORTH IT).  I try to get myself one once a paycheck.  However, I have to earn it.  To get my massage I have to workout at least 10 times.  So basically a minimum of 5x a week for 2 weeks.  I check off my workouts and at the end of 10 times (sometimes more like 15 or 20 depending on how many workouts I do in a day) on my rest day I schedule an hr long massage.  But I have to hit the goal of 10 times before I can schedule.  If you don't like massages or can't afford them, do something you like!  A nice dinner, a movie you want to see, a manicure/pedicure, a new book- get yourself something relatively small to keep you on track.  Another thing I use as a little prize= new cute workout clothes.  Because honestly?  Who wants ratty ass gym wear?  I want to look good while I'm killing it.  So every other paycheck (1x a month) I will hit up Target for a couple new items, or buy one slightly more expensive awesome item to keep me feeling sex-ay at the gym.

Bigger prizes are for bigger goals.  Like right now I'm doing Focus T25 as you know.  That is 5 days a week for 10 weeks.  So 50 days.  At the end of that I will probably get myself something I've been wanting.  Not gonna lie it's probably going to be something fitness related :P  Or maybe a spa day (can you tell I like the spa??)  Or how about at the conclusion of 100 workouts, you splurge a little bit.  A mini shopping spree.  A new haircut at the fancy salon.  Something you've been wanting/saving up for.  You deserve it for being awesome.  Plus if it's something you really want, you'll be more likely to work out to get it ;)

And for real...never deprive yourself.  If you want wine or a cocktail or a cookie, have it!  Have cheat days.  They are necessary to living a fit lifestyle.  Never get so involved that you restrict yourself to having no fun.  You will fail.  Have at least one cheat a week, and always reward yourself just because.  Just keep it in balance (i.e. don't cheat and stuff your face with cookies every day- try to do 80% good and 20% cheats) and it'll all work out.

So There Ya Have It

These are things I do every day to stay motivated and on track with my new love of fitness and my lover, Gym.  Once you get into the habit of doing these things, it'll seem like second nature.  And you will be soooo much happier!  Just recognize it will be a hard journey.  But you are strong enough to do it and you are never alone.  Ever.  I'm here.  Seriously.  If you're having some motivational issues, email me and I will bust out a pep talk that would make Hollywood producers cry.  You are worth it.  Just decide that you are!

Holy Burning Booty Batman!

What up friends?  Hope your Tuesday was awesome sauce.

Two things.  First I officially became a BeachBody coach :D  I'm so excited to be involved with such a great company and I truly stand behind the products.  If anyone has any questions for me about anything, just let me know!!

Yayyyy so excited!

Second thing- I officially met my first "internet friend".  She's the sweetest girl (in the Tone It Up community) and she was in the area on vacay.  She was going to a barre class tonight and asked if I wanted to join.  Anything that's remotely dance-related and I'm in y'all!!

So this class is the reason for the name of this post.  Because for realz....my booty is burning!  My abs are burning, my whole lower body is really burning.  Imma feel that shiz tomorrow man (and I have week 2 of Focus T25 starting tomorrow..)

Love me some AD....but suriously...probs a big miscalculation on my part

I love barre classes.  They are a serious sniper- very grassy knoll status.  You watch someone do the moves and you're like "meh...I won't really get a workout".  And then ya do the moves....and your legs are shaking and you're basically DYING.  I loved it though.  I'll probably go back.  No scratch that.  I'll definitely go back.

Meeting someone from the TIU community really showed me how positive everyone who is in the community is.  It's great meeting people who have the same goals as you and who are super nice and supportive.  I love the fact that I joined :)  If any TIU girls read this blog, reach out!  I'd love to meet up, form a support group, whatever!!

Anyways, I gotta go cause DanceMoms is on.  And y'all know how I feel about DM.

Love me some Kenzie.  Get it gurl

So goodnight lovies!  Stay motivated- you got this.

Plan for tomorrow is focusT25 cardio and weightlifting and zumba.  I haven't weightlifted in a week so I'm in for a rude awakening :O

Fitness Review: Focus T 25/Shakeology

Hey all!  Hope your Mondays were fucking awesome.  I worked out this morning- training for my 5k- and then decided to take the afternoon off.  Cause ya know what?  I can.  It's technically my rest day anyways so I totally overachieved this morning.  The beebs and I are grillin out tonight :)

This morning's bootycall workout- about 40 min alternating walking and running

Anyways, I have just finished my first week of Focus T25/Shakeology and wanted to share my opinion with y'all.

With the ever amazing Shaun T

Alright sewwwwwwwwww....what is Focus T 25?  The way I like to explain it is, FT25 is Insanity for the less insane.  You work out 5 days a week- one 25 min session for the first 4 days, and then a "double day" on the fifth day.  Then you have 2 days off, and a stretching video to do during your off days.  There are 2 stages:  alpha stage and beta stage.  Each stage lasts 5 weeks (so 50 days total- 25 alpha and 25 beta).

The alpha series includes: Cardio, Speed, Total Body Circuit, Ab Intervals, and Lower Focus.
The beta series includes:  Core Cardio, Speed, Rip't Circuit, Dynamic Core, and Upper Focus.

The workouts were made to start on a Monday so you could rest over the weekend, but I like to buck trends so I started on a Wednesday.  Total Hipster Move.

The workouts are extremely challenging for a 25 min time period- they utilize the high intensity interval training method to get your heart rate up.  Here are some pics of me after workouts:

Me after day 1- cardio

My Before "Yay let's workout!!" and After "WTF did I just do" photos- this was after the double day, which for the first week is lower body and cardio.

As you can see, I got pretty sweaty lol.  But I loved it, every single minute of it.  Even if there were times when I was cursing like a sailor.  The workouts are HARD.  But because they're only 25 min long, I never dreaded them, and I never felt like I couldn't finish.  It's pretty awesome sauce.

Of the workouts, I would rank them in this order (hardest to easiest:  1) cardio and total body circuit; 2) ab intervals; 3) lower focus; and 4) speed.  They are all challenging, but I had the most problems getting through the cardio and the total body circuit.  I did pretty well with the ab intervals and lower focus.  To me, the speed video was hard, but I thought the others outweighed it.

Another thing I really appreciated was that Shaun T was very into FORM.  He always stressed form was the most important.  Like some of the videos require you to do burpees (gag me with a spoon).  Instead of focusing on how many burpees you could do, Shaun T focused on making sure your form was good- quality over quantity.  I quite appreciate that, especially given my propensity to injure myself.

Now, in addition to the Focus T25, I am doing Shakeology.  For those of you who don't know, Shakeology is pretty much the best thing ever.  It is a very healthy, nutrient dense meal replacement shake.  Currently, it comes in a couple flavors:  Vanilla, Chocolate, Vegan Chocolate, Greenberry, and Tropical Strawberry (which is also vegan).  Some people balk at the price, but if you break it down, it's only about $5 a day- basically, a daily starbucks.  And soooo much better for you!

I have the vegan chocolate.  And lemme tell you.  That shit is so good!  I've done it in a blender bottle with just water, I've blended it to make an actual shake.  It is ah-mayz-ing.  Like I didn't think it would be tht good so it was doubly amazing.  I usually have it for breakfast, and it keeps me pretty good to go.

I have noticed a lot of my digestive issues (I suffer from IBS and a multitude of other GI problems) have significantly quieted down since I started shakeology.  I've had like maybe one bad day?  And having only been using the product for less than a week, I'd say that's pretty good.  Like ridiculously good.  I feel good, and I feel lean- which, if y'all know anything about IBS, is a rare feeling sometimes cause you bloat a lot.  I fully support this product and it's been less than a week- that's how good it is.  If you have some tummy troubles, you may wanna look into Shakeology.  For realz.

Overall stats for the first week of T25 and Shakeology?

-1.5 pounds
-0.5 inches off my waist

Considering the fact that I've been at a weight loss plateau for a long ass time, I was over the moon when I saw that I had almost dropped 2 pounds!  I'm not really doing this to lose weight per say- maybe 5 or at the most 10 pounds- but it's a pretty awesome feeling to actually see your hard work pay off.  Especially when you've been having problems with that.  I will keep you guys updated each week of my progress.  I'm really hoping for a toned tummy!  That's my goal.

If you want specifics on any of the vids/workouts just let me know!  Is anyone else taking on the FT25 challenge?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Off to grill.  I'll share one of my own workouts tomorrow :)

Weekend Fun!

Whatup beauties!

This weekend was a whirlwind.  We met up with le boyfriend's parents and had a super fun time in Annapolis.  Y'all.  The food there was ah-mayz-ing.  So much fresh seafood.  *drool*

Two awesomesauce things happened this weekend.  I finished my first week of focus T 25 (review up tomorrow!).  And I became a Tone It Up girl!!  Yay!  I can't wait to join such an empowering, positive community :)

Anywhos, I'm tired!!  I gotta get up early tomorrow morning and do my first ever bootycall workout ;)  This week, I'll post my review of focus T25/shakeology so far and some awesome workouts I've created to share with you.

Hope you have a great rest of your weekend before a nasty case of the Mondays comes and gets ya tomorrow!

New Month, New Me

Hey guys!  Long time, no see!  Basically I was off doing a little soul searching.  Ya know, figuring out what I wanna do with my life and all that jazz.  Really focusing on myself.  And ya know, I really started to notice that fitness is wormin its way into my life.  Like I can't live without it.  I even started...running.

*gasp*

I know right?  Ridic, especially from me, the queen of "I don't run anywhere unless there's a sample sale or a murderer".  But now that I'm like in a kinda serious relationship with Fitness, I figured the best way to keep seeing him (not to mention cheat on him with the very sexy bad boy, Temptation and/or his twin brother Unhealthy Lifestyle) would be to kinda change the tone of my blog just a lil bit.  So the focus now is fitness, and my journey to be healthy.  But never fear- I still love me some mimosas, and some sparkly things, and pretty much anything fabulous.  So I'll still be posting stuff of that nature.  But I need to do this for me.  Share my good days, bad days, successes, failures.  Be candid and honest about how I'm going to go about reaching my goals.  And this blog is the perfect way to do that.  So I'm hoping that y'all will join me on my journey, even as I stumble and trip over everything in my way

So I'm off for now.  Like literally, am getting my ass up and bopping off to the gym.  But expect some more postage from me in the near future- I have lots of ideas up my sleeve :)
